What is NeuroStra ITI?

NeuroStra is an Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute (ITI) that brings together the neuroscience research laboratories and teams of the cities of Strasbourg and Illkirch-Graffenstaden. 

Our goals: 

  • build a research community around unifying themes
  • train the researchers of tomorrow through our neuroscience graduate program
  • attract talented young researchers through our program “Junior Group Leader”
  • promote interdisciplinarity through our programs “ID projects” and “ID thesis”
  • promote neuroscience to the general public

Core themes

Nociception and pain

Deciphering the complexity of pain at three levels: the biology and circuits of pain, the comorbidities associated with pain, the development and improvement of treatments.

Time in perception and action

Studying the fundamental mechanisms of temporal organizations in the nervous system, and the pathological consequences of their disorganization.

Neurodegenerative diseases

Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal lobe dementia, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis... Contribution of risk factors such as ageing and genetic variants.

Transversal themes

Computational neuroscience

Multi-scale and multi-system computational modeling, and translational applications in neurology and neuropsychology of concepts derived from neurophysics.

Neuroepigenetics

Omics approaches combined with high-throughput sequencing to study neurodegenerative diseases, psychiatric disorders and addiction: molecular bases, progression, risk factors, and the development of new therapeutic options.

Translation from animal to human

Characterizing human phenotypes in mental health pathologies (psychiatry, addiction, dementia, pain-related depression) by identifying physiological markers in animals, to develop therapies and early diagnostic tools.

Cognitive neuroscience

Neural mechanisms that underlie perception, attention, and memory, as well as the alterations of these processes in pathological conditions.

Interdisciplinary training in neuroscience and pain (in English)
Interdisciplinary neuroscience training focused on pain, from molecular mechanisms to systems-level understanding.

Dual Master in neuroscience

Dual training in neuropsychological assessment, rehabilitation planning, and clinical research.

Summer schools

Advanced tools for data analyses in neuroscience. Data preparation, analysis, and sharing. Use of simulation and modeling tools capable of generating predictions in the field of neuroscience.

Neurobiology of rhythms, from basics to environmental impacts. 
Theoretical and practical knowledge of biological rhythms and their integration into experimental research.

The NeuroStra institute is part of the ITI project, led jointly by the University of Strasbourg, the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm), under the Excellence Initiative (IdEx) program and France 2030.
